Hey Gays!
I was tickled pink when Sergio from Gay Bachelor Blog told me that he had been following (and enjoying) my Montréal Blog, and then proceeded to invite me to be a featured bachelor. At first I hesitated – do I really have what it takes to be a gay bachelor? And then I realized… oh, right. I am one of those by default.

I was then requested to submit a bio about myself, highlighting why you, the faithful reader of Gay Bachelor Blog, might find me mildly intriguing. I commenced diligently, but then after a half-bottle of wine, I fell asleep on my laptop and woke up with ASDFGHJKL imprinted on my forehead. It turns out that I’m far more boring than I ever suspected.

So, in order to ensure such a travesty never happened again, I decided to interview myself. That way, I was forced to switch seats frequently, eliminating the chance of another snooze-fest. What resulted was a poignant, heartfelt interview that sheds light on multifaceted gay identities, the complexities of attraction and my thoughts on doing porn.

So, Daniel, thanks for agreeing to this interview! Welcome to the penthouse suite of the Montréal Queen Elizabeth Hotel…
Actually this is my living room.

Right. I like your collection of vintage records, that must get you lot of tail!
It doesn’t work against me.

So tell me about being gay, that must be pretty hard for you…
Ummm, no. I like being gay. It’s been the precursor to renouncing so many societal expectations. I feel like there is this grand predetermined ‘social narrative’ of who and what we are supposed be and do: school, marriage, mortgage, kids, career, etc. When I went through my ‘coming out,’ I was really able to deconstruct these expectations, and etch out a life and identity that felt most comfortable for me. And now the older I get, the more liberated I feel.

Yes, but enough pansy, ‘self-actualization’ mumble-jumble! Are you a top or a bottom? Giver or receiver? Pitcher or catcher? Do you like to serve the sausage or do you prefer to eat the meat? You know what I’m sayin’?
Yes, thanks, I’m pretty sure I understand the question. Each of my relationships is uniquely negotiated. I don’t feel the need to limit myself to a specific sexual role identity.

Well okay Mr. Snooty Pants! Then what do you look for in a guy?
I gravitate to individuals who exhibit intelligence, emotional communicativeness, humor, openness and care of physical health.

BORING! What about a guy with a dirty porn moustache? Hot or not??
Well, it definitely could be hot. For me, it’s all about the confidence and charm behind the accessories or stylistic elements.

So I see that you write a blog. What’s it like being a shameless cyberwhore?
Well I’ve been blogging for almost four years now. In March of 2009, Tourisme Montréal invited me to blog about Gay Life in Montréal. It’s been a ton of fun. I feel really blessed to have expanded my online community, while keeping folks engaged and entertained. In fact, here are some of my favorite moments:

• A drag queen makeover with Montréal’s most famous Drag Queen
• A lesbian haircut
• Riding a Bixi bike through the Gay Village
• My Gay Interview with the Barenaked Ladies

Blah Blah Blah! What the fack is so great about Montréal?
Well I grew up in Prince George, BC. We lived on the edge of the city and had moose and bears walking through our back yard. I was an awesome place to be a kid, so much space for exploring and adventure.

But now that I’m older, I crave a dynamic, urban location. Montréal is a haven, not only for queer peoples, but also for anyone who is searching for a thriving art scene, great food, funky shops, crazy nightlife and sophisticated European influences. Whenever I arrive here after a trip away, it feels like this really restorative breath of fresh air.

So what’s next for you? Maybe a role in an adult entertainment flick?
Well, at the moment, I’m not convinced that would be the best decision for my personal brand. Eventually I’d like to do some more international travel, finding ways to connect with communities in different countries around the world. But for now I’m really happy and grateful to be blogging for Tourisme Montréal, going to yoga classes, hanging with friends and enjoying life.

Well thanks for taking the time to lull us into a coma! By the way, you look an awful lot like Bjork. Do you get that a lot?
Actually, no.

The best way to get a hold of Daniel is to lasso him. But if your rodeo skills are still developing, perhaps try “Facebook” – he sure spends a lot of time there. He also enjoys the twitter – join his adventure @Daniel_Baylis. Finally, he recently launched his own blog where he fully intends to dominate the Canadian, gay, scooter-driving, yoga, travel internet niche: ::: BAYLIS :::
